10 Steps to Bathroom Safety for Seniors

Is your bathroom safe for seniors? According to the National Institute on Aging (NIA), more than one in three seniors over the age of 65 fall each year and 80 percent of these falls are in the bathroom.

Health experts have identified the challenges seniors face in a bathroom:

  • Getting in and out of the bathtub or shower stall
  • Standing while taking a shower
  • Sliding shower doors that move easily
  • Wet and slippery floors
  • Bathmats that move
  • Using towel bars, sink tops and soap holders to support oneself
  • Sitting down and getting up from the toilet

Research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that 1.6 million older adults seek emergency care each year for fall-related injuries, fractures or head trauma. Many of these occur in the bathroom and can cause the elderly to lose their independence or worse still, their lives.

Here are some important precautions Energy Star Remodeling takes to senior-proof the bathroom.

  • Install grab bars. They provide a firm support for seniors to hold on to as they enter and exit the shower or the tub.
  • Upgrade to a walk-in shower with a hinged door or a bathtub with a wide rim or bench to sit on and swing legs into the tub.
  • Use a sturdy shower bench rather than a stool that can slip when the shower floor is wet.
  • Install a handheld shower. It is easier to use when sitting down.
  • Ensure that faucets are clearly marked hot and cold.
  • Install bright lights and put switches in easily accessible places.
  • Make sure toiletries e.g. soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothbrush, toothpaste, towel, etc. are within reach. We'll avoid clutter and take away things that are unnecessary.
  • Install non-slip shower floors

A budget-friendly remodel can be done for as low as $26,000 including finish accessories.  Various factors will determine the final cost including the amount of labor, rough-materials is required and weather or not you are hiring an insured contractor. The average cost to remodel a standard size bathroom range from $22,000 - $40,000. Due to the many types of finished products such as vanities, light fixtures, faucets, mirror, flooring and other items alike, it is most common for contractors to include labor cost and rough materials only. It is most recommended for the homeowners to visit showrooms and purchase these finishing touches to their unique taste.

Plumbing relocation could cost upwards of $10,000 to do. We would put this service at the top of our list.

The focal point of a bathroom is the shower area. Whether it's a tub or a shower, remodeling it offers the highest return on investment. If you are upgrading your master bathroom for example, replacing your tub with a large walk-in shower is not only more luxurious and comfortable but it can raise your home's value.

It's common that unlicensed contractors wont offer a valid insurance. The average bathroom remodel will also require multiple city inspections making sure there won't be any leaks hidden behind the walls or under the tile as well as electrical inspection. Cutting corners like this allows them to offer lower prices, but it presents a big risk for homeowners.
